I think wherever a person is from he or she carries a love/hate relationship with the place. In my case, I tend to carry it with me everywhere. When I am away, I start to miss Chicago, but while I am here I long for so many other places. I’m just a restless soul and I think most of us are. Maybe this is why I’ve gotten so many request to do a few states from one person. West Virginia and Florida? Texas and California please! Indiana and what about South Carolina? It a mobile, ever moving world, why stay put? Why not belong to one or two places? Heck, give me three places to call home!

I haven’t had any giveaways in a while, so I think it’s about time! I had a wonderful time in San Francisco at the <a href="http://www.renegadecraft.com/ target="_blank">Renegade Craft Fair and it was fantastic seeing returning customers and meeting new friends.

I love maps, vintage travel brochures, plotting points, and day dreaming about these places. Perhaps it’s rooted in the family road trips we took when we were younger. We were allowed to sit in the front seat only if we were to help navigate (or if we were fighting!). Before our smart phones and GPS systems, we had to plot points and plan. Last year, when I drove to San Francisco from Chicago with two friends, we stopped in Nebraska to debate a detour to Southern Utah’s Goblin Valley and if we would have enough time. Being smart phone-less at the time, we had to figure it out the old fashion way with time we had and the miles we would need to drive. It worked out perfectly and felt entirely archaic, yet accomplished. So, here is the first poster in a series of many inspired by the sense of adventure and travel! And yes, it’s the fine state of California.

California poster, 11×15, two color letterpress print printed on a Vandercook 3

Some of our goodies at the fair

I had the most wonderful neighbors! Recession Clothing, where I got my hands on this lovely piece. Mmmmm… how hot are their models!? They are from the beautiful city of Portland, Oregon.

To my left was Yokomono Studio from Berkeley, California. She was super sweet and talented and I loved everything.

All in all, a perfect and smoothly run show. It’s always a bit stressful when doing shows solo or in a different city, but this one was one of my favorites!

If you ever happen on San Francisco near Pier 39 to see the seals (or, what seals decided to stay), walk a few piers down to Pier 45 at Fisherman’s Wharf. Grab a calm chowder in a bread bowl on the way. Oh, and be sure your pockets are filled with quarters because at Pier 45 you will find Musee Mechanique (careful, the website contains creepy cackling!). I’ve been here twice two years in a row to marvel at the turn of the century coin operated machines. There’s this certain nostalgia that swells inside me, even though I grew up with game systems. Nothing beats the quarter machines or when you’re little, the constant begging to borrow a quarter from the parents for a few minutes of gratification.

Besides the plethora of games and images from days past, there are some amazing fonts. Here are some of my favorites:

Reminds me of the font Budmo, but so much better. I love the colors and the wood grain! Who doesn’t want their palm read for a mere 50 cents?

Love the script of the company’s name on this pin ball machine. As always, the classic sans-serif, is clean, modern, and wonderful.

Yum on the kerning of this vintage photobooth. How about that Western-inspired font, EYE LEVEL ?

The Inquest is one of my favorites at the museum. The buffalo really don’t do much except shake their heads, but the entire oddity of it fascinates me. Yes, that is a dead person under them – WEIRD, huh? I LOVE it.

Sure, I am Polish, (Can you tell by the last name?) but how incredible is Polish design? One of my favorite design blogs, Pan Tu Mie Stał (You were not standing here) is jam packed with great design and illustration – especially the vintage stuff. It also comes in an English version! Let us take a moment to just swooooon. In fact, I cannot wait for my Cześź t-shirt to arrive to the States! (Yeah, I couldn’t help myself; I am a sucker for condensed fonts and Polish characters.)

Let’s look a little more at this lovely blog, shall well?
Yes please on the vinyl!

With so much turmoil in the country’s history, Poland has shown strength with visual design – a mix of Modern, metaphors, simplicity, the past, and keeping ahead of the curve. When I came across this vintage Polish stamp collection, it was like unearthing a visual treasure! Here are some of my favorites.

Polish stamp with CCCP space program imagery. Check out that 60’s rocket blasting into orbit

These basketball ones from 1963 are nothing short of amazing. The figure hardly looks like any silhouette of a basketball player, but it has a nice graceful feminine quality to it.

How wonderful is this one with Laika, the first dog the Russians sent into space? Unfortunately, she was sent up there with the known fact she would not return. Despite this, her image has graced Soviet stamps and posters. There is also a monument of her in Moscow.

Fun illustrations with the stamps. What about those amazing mushrooms and that cat meowing… maybe crying?

For more Polish stamps, visit my vintage section on Flickr. I am hoping to pay homage to Warsaw’s Wilanów Poster Museum in October. Has anyone ever been there? It looks like a place I could easily spend hours in. I think a trip to Polska is far overdue. I need some old-fashion root-searchin’ and art inspiration.

Cheers and hope everyone has a wonderful weekend!

Well, looks like Olga, my 12×18 Chandler and Price has a new friend – a Vandercook #3 from the 1950s inspected by a H.L. Keller and made right here in Chicago, Illinois! She seems very Americana too me – so, her name is Ellie Mae. Yes, I now have a hometown-er in the studio! Moving was a ran smoothly for the most part. The hardest was getting the 800lb press on these two piano dollies and rolling the press down the ramp into the truck. Once we got to my studio the challenge was rolling her up the ramp to the dock – phew. My heart was holding its place both times! Luckily, I have some pretty wonderful men in my life who helped – My dad, Drew, and my Dziadz (my grandfather). Yes, my amazing grandfather helped! Once we got back to the apartment, Drew and I needed a nap. I knew my Dziadz would be right back at work at his house in the burbs. I called him today to check up on him and it was no surprise that he did outdoor chores after the big move! As he put it, “Every day is a good day!” Which proves, that if you stay busy and young at heart, life is so much more rewarding!

Here are some photos of the move:
left from right: The press in her downtown location in the West Loop, putting the press on the dolly, the carriage all taped up and ready to go, moving down the ramp.
